Data Protection
Last updated: April 5, 2025
This page explains how WebScrapeKit approaches data protection, with particular reference to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and similar laws. We have designed WebScrapeKit with privacy as a core principle, not an afterthought.
Our Core Principle: No Server, No Data
WebScrapeKit processes everything locally inside your browser. When you extract data from a web page, that data goes directly to your screen and your device. It does not pass through any server we control. We have no database of scraped content, no user accounts, and no means of accessing what you extract.
This design decision was deliberate. The simplest way to protect your data is to never collect it in the first place.
What Counts as Personal Data
Under GDPR, personal data is any information that relates to an identified or identifiable natural person. This includes names, email addresses, phone numbers, IP addresses, and location data, among other things.
If you use WebScrapeKit to extract personal data (for example, email addresses of individuals), you become the data controller for that data. You are responsible for ensuring you have a lawful basis for collection and that you handle the data in compliance with applicable law.
WebScrapeKit as a Data Processor
WebScrapeKit acts purely as a tool. Because no extracted data is transmitted to us, we are not a data processor under GDPR in relation to the content you scrape. The data controller obligations rest entirely with you as the user of the tool.
Analytics Data We Do Collect
This website uses Google Analytics and Vercel Analytics to understand how people find and use the site. The data collected through these tools may include:
- Anonymised IP addresses
- Browser type and version
- Country and region (derived from IP)
- Pages visited and time spent
- Referral source
This data is used solely for improving the website and understanding traffic patterns. It is not used to identify individuals and is not sold to third parties.
Legal Basis for Analytics
The legal basis for processing analytics data is our legitimate interest in understanding how the website is used in order to improve it (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). The data is anonymised and the processing is proportionate to this interest.
Data Transfers
Google Analytics may transfer data to servers in the United States. Google participates in the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, which provides an adequacy mechanism for such transfers. Vercel processes data in accordance with its own transfer safeguards.
Your Rights
Under GDPR and similar regulations, you have the following rights regarding personal data we hold about you:
- Right of access: You can request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Right to erasure: You can request that we delete personal data we hold about you.
- Right to object: You can object to processing based on legitimate interests.
- Right to restriction: You can request that we restrict processing of your data in certain circumstances.
- Right to portability: You can request your data in a structured, machine-readable format.
Because we do not collect identifiable personal data beyond what analytics tools capture, we may not be able to fulfil requests that rely on identifying you as an individual. You can exercise your rights over Google Analytics data directly through the Google Analytics Opt-out Add-on or your Google account settings.
Data Retention
We do not retain any data extracted by the extension. Analytics data is retained by Google and Vercel according to their respective policies. Scrape history stored locally on your device remains there until you choose to clear it.
Security
Because all extraction happens locally, the security of extracted data depends on the security of your own device and browser profile. We recommend keeping Chrome updated and using standard device security practices.
